As the sun sets on another summer, Summit High School's boys golf team is gearing up for a season that promises to be both thrilling and challenging. With the new school year just around the corner, the team has already hit the ground running, hosting tryouts and preparing for their first official tournament.
Head coach Zach Dobrota is optimistic about the team's prospects, especially with the seasoned seniors leading the charge. "I'm expecting big things from our seniors, and they seem to have that same mindset, which is a great sign," he shared. Among the seniors, Parker Gray, Hunter Plummer, and Sawyer Coffman stand out, with all three eyeing a state berth and potentially a future in golf beyond high school.
But it's not just the seniors who are making waves. Dobrota highlighted a group of talented underclassmen, including Jack Tobias, Jagger Roberts, Jaxx Roberts, and Fisher Woodard, who all have the potential to peak at the right time and make a significant impact.
"The competition within the team is fierce," Dobrota explained. "With such a strong and closely matched roster, no one's spot is guaranteed. Every tournament will be a battle for a spot on the roster, and that's a good problem to have."
One of the unique challenges Summit High's golf team faces is the geographical divide. The Front Range, with its proximity to golf courses and longer seasons, will provide some of the toughest competition. Dobrota noted, "The Front Range schools have an advantage with more facilities and year-round golf. We'll be up against some exceptional golfers, and that's an exciting prospect."
Among the Front Range tournaments, the Eisenhower Blue course at the Air Force Academy stands out as a particularly daunting challenge. "The greens there are some of the toughest in the country. It'll be a true test of our short game and putting skills," Dobrota said.
Despite the tough competition, Dobrota emphasized the importance of having fun. "Ultimately, we want our golfers to enjoy the game. They're students first, and we want them to balance their academic and athletic pursuits."
As the season progresses, Summit High's boys golf team will travel to various tournaments, showcasing their talent and representing their school with pride. It's an exciting journey, and we can't wait to see how they fare against the best the state has to offer.
